summers and sharks
2017-06-17, 3:10 p.m.

Without my actually seeing the films, allow me to comment on how the two women-vs-shark films last summer (The Shallows) and this summer (47 Meters Down) reflect our cultural/political seascape each year. In the first, Blake Lively sets out on a finding-herself adventure and learns more about her own grit than planned, triumphantly, it seems. Not for nothing I think there is only one shark in this one. In 47 Meters Down, 2 women are talked into getting into a metal cage and getting dropped by men into shark-filled, nay shark-infested, deep waters and... things do *not* go as well as promised, it appears.
